Denso Spark Plugs NHRA U.S. Nationals Friday preview

The Denso Spark Plugs NHRA U.S. Nationals, the oldest and most prestigious event in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, takes center stage this weekend at historic Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. Now in its 66th season, the event features a packed schedule including Mello Yello Drag Racing Series competition in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle along with the E3 Spark Plugs Pro Mod series, the Mickey Thompson Tires Top Fuel Harley Series, the SAM Tech.edu Factory Stock Showdown. In addition, there will be a full complement of Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series classes. All told, there will be 17 champions crowned by Sunday evening including.

This year’s U.S. Nationals also features a number of special events including the Mickey Thompson Pro Bike Battle that was originally scheduled to run in Sonoma, and the JEGS Allstars race, that was moved from Chicago to Indy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is also unfinished business in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Mod, and Top Fuel Harley from this summer’s Lucas Oil NHRA Summernationals also held in Indy. The final rounds of that event were interrupted by rain and will be run this weekend. In Top Fuel, there is a battle of first-time finalists featuring rookie Justin Ashley and T.J. Zizzo while DSR teammates Jack Beckman and Matt Hagan will meet to decide the Funny Car title. Randal Andras and Jay Turner are the Top Fuel Harley finalists. Finally, Chad Green and Jason Scruggs will square off to decide the Pro Mod title.
